Electroacoustic to the utmost, Frost and Bjarnason composed the score by conventional means, introduced it to a transcription software, then stood back as Sinfonietta Cracovia re-transcribed the electron stream back to brick-and-mortar instruments again.
There are many interpretations of Andrei Tarkovsky’s punishing 1972 film version of Stanislaw Lem’s classic novel, but Frost/Bjarnason’s song titles “You Mean More To Me Than Any Scientific Truth” and “Cruel Miracles” are just two early indications that their score strives to highlight the film’s humanity. Then the music starts.
This is an elegant, sometimes turbulent hour. Shortlisted for album of the year.
