Press Reviews for Disquiet

Debut release from the American composer and sound technician.

Noises travel further on cold winter days, sound waves refracted downwards; the crackle and caw of distant animals and birds mingling in clear air with theclose-by rustles of coats and companions. It’s this particular heightened listening experience that Texas-born composer and engineer Corley seems to be reaching for on his debut release for Valgeir Sigurðsson’s Icelandic label collective. Inspired by the nature recordings of Chris Watson, the bare-branch guitar patterns of Loren Connors and possibly even the slow, enveloping piano epics of Morton Feldman, Corley – who’s previously engineered such landmark recordings as Tim Hecker’s Ravedeath 1972, Ben Frost’s By The Throat and Valgeir Sigurðsson’s Draumalandið - has here crafted four transcendental prepared piano pieces, layered and broken within a clear reverberant landscape of melodic distortion, lonesome field echo and fathomless deep-space bass.
