Press Reviews for Architecture Of Loss

Valgeir Sigurðsson has the unlikely honour of being ranked among Iceland’s least recognisable, but most widely heard musical exports. Despite lending his name and talents to some of the country’s most celebrated releases, Sigurðsson’s profile seems - at first glance, at least - to be several notches below his collaborators and colleagues: Bjork, Bonnie Prince Billy, Coco Rosie, Nico Muhly, Feist, Thom Yorke et. al. His role as record producer and curator of the hugely respectable Bedroom Community label yields a quiet notoriety, yes, but we doubt that Sigurðsson would begrudge us describing his musical output as a smaller-size endeavour than many of the artists around him.

Of course, this is no statement on quality. Sigurðsson’s forthcoming LP Architecture of Loss (released, of course, by Bedroom Community) is a staggeringly beautiful collection of heavyweight, noise-inflected classicist compositions. Nor is it a statement on style: while preview piece ‘Big Reveal’ is formed from throbbing, machinist percussion and brittle viola in the elegant (but updated) mould of Pärt or Górecki, elsewhere on the record we find moments of near silence and almost folk-like lyricism. The palette is rangy and intelligent; the vision is structured but flexible, and - much like the album’s digitised cover art - developed meticulously from minutiae. Fascinating and adventurous, we have a welcome foil to the overtly pretty side of modern classical music and a superb body of work in its own right.
