Press Reviews for A U R O R A

Ben Frost is a name that you’ve likely heard in passing, but have been indirectly listening to all along. The droning noisemaker has lent his production arm to standouts within the darker spoils of the avant garde scene in recent years, most notably on Swans’ morbid collision The Seer as well as Colin Stetson’s New History Warfare series and Tim Hecker’s Virgins. It’s been five years since Frost himself released a proper album in BY THE THROAT, and while he’s been busy contributing to others’ art, he’s surely refined his skills throughout the time away (especially after being handpicked by legendary ambient producer Brian Eno to collaborate with him in an apprenticeship capacity.)

This spring, Frost finally reemerges under his own name in the forefront of electronic annihilation when he releases A U R O R A, an album that enlists Swans’ Thor Harris and current Guardian Alien and former Liturgy kit guy Greg Fox for a doubling of heavy drumming assists.“Venter” is the LP’s first single and centerpiece, a six-minute-long menacing adventure over a frozen tundra that leads up to heart-racing mountain of percussives before an avalanche of crystallized synths and icy burns bury you chest deep just upon reaching the apex. The bright hues of the season may be in full bloom by the time this LP arrives, but the cold, scary atmosphere bleeding throughout Icelandic-by-way-of-Australian soundmaker’s composition puts spring off into a far off distance.
