Daníel At Dark Music Days

Daníel Bjarnason returns to Dark Music Days, the festival that saw the premiere of his piano concerto Processions in 2009. For this 2011 edition he will be conducting the Iceland Symphony Orchestra as well as premiering a newly composed piece; Birting (Emergence).

After the premiere of the Processions concerto in 2009 Daníel released his debut album, also titled Processions. The album has garnered tremendous critical acclaim and has brought Daníel the title 'composer of the year' and 'composition of the year' at the Icelandic Music Awards, a nomination for the Nordic Music Prize and a Kraumur music award.

The Dark Music Days festival, first held in 1980, aims to celebrate diversity in music and is surely one of the most important platforms for contemporary music in Iceland. The 2011 edition takes place January 27th - 30th, offering 16 different concerts and events in Reykjavík. Daníel will be performing on the opening night in Háskólabíó on the 27th. Other compositions that night include a clarinet concerto by Steingrímur Rohloff, a violin concerto by Finnur Torfi Stefánsson and György Ligeti's Atmosphères, which many might recognize from Stanley Kubrick's reknowned 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The concert starts at 19:30 sharp and there are still some tickets available via www.midi.is and/or at Háskólabíó.

What the press says

Processions deserves to be [Bjarnason's] global breakthrough. It’s the sound of fire and instinct, the musical equivalent of a controlled burn. Perhaps all sounds to silence come, but thanks to Bjarnason, that sonic Armageddon seems a long distance away.

“Surely one of the most bombastic modern classical albums you’re likely to hear all year”.
